Borderlands 4 Announcement and Reveal Trailer at Gamescon
Borderlands 4 Reveal Trailer!
It’s finally happening! Borderlands fans have been waiting a long time for some news and today we got a brand new Borderlands 4 reveal trailer at Gamecon with a release window of 2025.
This trailer was a FAR DEPARTURE from the cell-shaded style of past games and to be honest, it looked like a Destiny trailer with the traveler. So it’s hard to predict what Borderlands 4 will look like based on this short trailer. Hopefully we’ll get more Borderlands 4 gameplay teasers before the end of the year.
What Did You Miss?
Even though the Borderlands 4 reveal trailer was extremely short, there were some secrets that you may have missed. Let’s take a closer look at some of the video frames that may hold clues to what kind of story we’ll get in Borderlands 4.
We first see a fiery phoenix sign in the sky, which symbolizes Lilith the siren, and then a phase-shifted Elpis moon. This means that the Borderlands 4 story will most likely take place AFTER Borderlands 3. Because at the end of BL3, (*SPOILER ALERT*), Lilith flies up to Elpis and burst into a flame-outlined phoenix, much like the one in this trailer. This is to seal Elpis and save Pandora. So it looks like she is probably still alive and has phase-shifted Elpis to this new universe or dimension.
Elpis blasts through the atmosphere or ward around another planet and rains down Bandit masks. The trailer shows off a couple buildings here that give off a space-themed vibe. Very futuristic.
At the end we see a robot arm reach into the flames and pick up one of the Bandit masks. The robot arm has long fingernails and quite a big hand to be grabbing the whole mask like that. Rumors circulating this trailer have theorized that this robot hand could belong to “The Watcher”. This Eridian character was first introduced into the Borderlands universe in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and is said to have telekinetic abilities, even forewarning others of danger. This character is also the one that warned Vault Hunters of a war in which they would need to recruit as many Vault Hunters as possible.
Is Handsome Jack Coming Back?
At the end of the trailer, you’ll notice a few images flash very quickly, and one of them is a face. Could this face be Handsome Jack? X user MozeVH put these two images together to show that the vault symbol placement is the exact same. We could see an alternate reality where Handsome Jack didn’t lose, or an Eridian resurrected Jack. What do you think?
Decoded Cipher
The last easter egg from the Borderlands 4 reveal trailer included a cool little cipher that popped up on the screen for a second. Using a cipher identifier to decrypt this message, it most likely reads this:
